![]() The claim that the black residue is your ear wax is nonsense. ![]() Qtips push wax further in and can in extreme cases rupture your eardrum. Likelihood is you won't get rid of all of it - which is fine since we're all supposed to have at least some wax - and you might still need to have your ears cleared by a professional but the suggestions above will help them out considerably and make the process safer and more comfortable. If you've had a perforation or any kind of surgery around your ears, maybe seek further advice before you proceed and always read the labels! It'll also probably make your hearing worse while you start this but it will improve - hang in there with it. I'd suggest getting them from a pharmacy since they'll have been dealt with in a sterile environment - food standards can be a good bit lower than medical standards sometimes, so don't just mix up your own solutions of baking soda or oil! If you can, ideally get them in a spray - it's easier to administer, a bit cleaner to deal with and it coats the wax a bit better - but drops will suffice just as well. For harder wax (usually black, it might make your ear itchy too) try sodium bicarbonate drops. They'll also tell you if there are any contra-indicators (although the only thing that's likely would be allergies or skin conditions).įor softer wax (usually a brownish colour) olive oil drops work really well. My recommendation depends on the wax in question so if you can have a professional check your ears first it would be ideal. You should make sure you don't have any underlying issues first!Īudiologist here with additional training on cerumen removal. I'm only telling you what worked for MY kiddo. I'm not a physician and I'm not giving you medical advice. My kiddo's ears are clean and clear- even the doc complimented them!! I do it once a month (I time it with my own monthly cycle so I don't forget) and he's had no more problems with impaction.ĭEFINITELY talk to YOUR doctor about this. I had no idea so much gunk could build up in there!!Īnyway- this method has worked well for us. It's both revolting and satisfying at the same time. Dont squirt it directly into the ear canal- you'll only impact in worse, you have to angle it toward the sides and toward the bottom to get the arch of water to flush the gunk out. I use one of those nasal aspirator bulb things and fill it with the warm sink water and squirt it toward the inside wall of his ear canal to flush it out. Then after a while (Fireman Sam is about 30 minutes so it's perfect) we go to the bathroom and I fill the sink with warm water (not hot). I wait about 5 minutes (being in front of a TV is good for this part), then I put a bit of cotton ball OVER (not IN) his ear when he turns his head to the other side. I make him lie down with his head on a pillow (with a towel underneath him of course!) and drip some drops into it ( I don't count them- enough to fill his ear). Then I use a dropper to drop several drop into his ear. I mix 1-part warm water (not hot, but fairly warm) wit 1-part hydrogen peroxide. I am NOT a doctor, but I'm happy to tell you what my doctor told me to do for my son, who is also a prolific earwax maker. /r/OutOfTheLoop: Current events you may have missed./r/explainlikeimfive: Simple explanations of complex subjects./r/CasualConversation: Casual conversations (duh)./r/askscience: Professional-level scientific explanations./r/AskReddit: General questions and opinions.Try and be objective - a product may be legitimate even though you personally dislike it.We don't require that comments include sources, but we appreciate it when they do!
